Epic, Historic, Real Change…
These are just a few of the words that come to mind when I think about the experience that I had joining the movement known to the world as #OCCUPYWALLSTREET on Saturday October 1, 2011.
I have been following the story on twitter, various independent blogs, and/or YouTube videos posted by protesters because the mainstream media has seemingly blacked out this story. Personally, I felt it was my duty to go see what was going on first hand and take as many pictures and videos that my iPhone could handle. I will upload all videos to our YouTube page and put some on our blog as well.
This is the scene that I captured from Zuccotti Park, now known as Liberty Square, up to the Brooklyn Bridge shutdown. I was on the Brooklyn Bridge toward the back of the protest and NYPD were everywhere. I didn’t hear any officers warn us about going on the bridge. NYPD claims they told protestors if they go on the bridge they will be arrested and this is why they arrested 700 plus protesters.
For the record, I was on the bridge and was not arrested. I was told to turn around and walk back where we came from. There was probably 100-150 of us that were able to leave free. Everyone was peaceful and united, it was beautiful.
I want to say one more thing about this movement. The Occupy Wall Street movement is as American as apple pie. The people there are as diverse as any city in America. All ages, races, classes, and they’re from all walks of life uniting for one reason. And whats that reason you might ask? TO BE HEARD. To voice their opinions and stand up for what they believe in, whatever that may be. That is the beauty of America, we have the right to free speech and some of us are out there protecting and exercising that right.
The revolution has started and its popping up all over the world. From Egypt to America people are demanding their countries back. They are targeting Government powers and greedy corporate interests because they control our policies. Now is the time to stand up for what you believe in, now is the time to let your voice be heard.
